As a digitizer, some of the questions I’m frequently asked are, “How do I convert a JPG to a PES file? What software do you recommend for creating my own designs?” I usually answer by letting the person know that there’s not really a way to simply “convert” a graphics format to an embroidery format and end up with a usable design. They are two totally different types of files. Graphics files are made up of shapes and objects (vector) or pixels (raster/bitmap) and embroidery files are made up of stitch commands that tell the machine when to start, stop, change colors, what length of stitch, what direction, and many other variables. Graphics files need to be digitized for embroidery, preferably by a skilled and experienced digitizer. IMPORTANT: Before digitizing an image or having it digitized or tracing it for any other use, please, please, please be sure you have the proper license/permission from the artist. Not only is it respectful, it will prevent expensive and time-consuming legal troubles down the road.
Ahhh, but there *is* a way to convert and it’s called auto-digitizing and there are quite a few programs out there (and even machines!) promising to easily convert your graphics to embroidery files with a few clicks. Prices range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.
I know from interacting with customers that many crafters who are familiar with vinyl and digital cutting are entering the embroidery world. These crafters are looking for a quick trace function similar to what exists in vinyl/graphics.
So, let’s look at some embroidery files that I created from high-quality vector .eps clipart. I used Wilcom’s Embroidery Studio software which is a top-notch professional program. If this was a raster file instead of a vector, some additional steps would need to be taken to reduce the number of colors in the design. Some common raster graphic formats are jpg, png, bmp, and gif. Some common vector graphic formats are eps, svg, dxf, ai, and cdr.
This design was auto-digitized. This is what you can expect if you want to simply “convert” graphics to stitches. I imported the graphic file into my Wilcom software and clicked around a few times to convert the image to stitches. The software decided what type of stitch to use, what angles to use, what underlay to use, and so on. This is as simple as it gets. What I ended up with had 6 colors but nearly 100 color changes so I sorted the colors into 9 steps and 6 colors since I planned to stitch this design. This design took about 10 minutes to produce from start to finish. The software pretty much did all the work. To be fair, I also ran the same image through Brother’s PE-Design Software “Image to Stitches” function. You can see the results HERE.
Next, I took the same image and imported it into a new file in my software. I didn’t convert or change anything. I used the graphic as a guide to create my embroidery design. I manually drew each element of the design and applied my own settings for start and stop, stitching order, stitch direction, stitch type, underlay, etc… If you’d like to see that process we have a video you can watch HERE. This took over an hour from start to finish (and I have nearly 10 years of digitizing experience and around 20 years of graphics experience).
Let’s take a look at how these designs stitch. I am going to use the same stabilizer, thread, materials, and technique for both designs so the only difference is the digitized file. The stabilizer is a 2.5 oz cutaway, the material is knit t-shirt hooped with the stabilizer, the thread is 40wt polyester embroidery thread, and I used my usual Organ 75/11 EEBR needles on my Brother 6 needle embroidery machine.
Here’s the auto-converted design first. There are jump stitches as a result of the software applying the lock stitch, trim, and jump settings instead of the digitizer (me). The circles ended up being stitched over. Very strange.
Stitching is gappy as a result of the software applying the settings for stitch direction, pull compensation, underlay, and density.

‘How old is my bicycle?’ is a question I get asked a lot, nearly as much as: ‘I have a bicycle that looks like one of yours; if I send you pictures please can you identify it for me?’
The answer, in short, is that I do not have time to tell you either. I’m not being callous about this. With an estimated 15,000 bicycle manufacturers, the odds are stacked against me recognizing yours; in any case, I do not claim to be an expert, just an assiduous recorder of information. To sift through information to try and find similar pictures to your unidentified bicycle would take me months, and I’m already doing similar research on my own bikes. Not only do I have a full-time job (I run my own business restoring and selling vintage vehicles) and am a hands-on parent of a young child, but I spend a minimum 30 hours every week building, updating and maintaining these free websites to help you do your own research. My hobby usually takes a backseat. Insomnia is my saving grace, otherwise there would be no time for any of this.
My purpose for creating these databases is simple. In the ‘old days’ (a time which seems to have ended in the past twenty five years or so), a youngster became an apprentice in a chosen field and learned its history from the older employees. Thus, for example, an apprentice mechanic was handed down an invaluable unwritten guide to repairing vehicles that could not be learned at college nor from books, because, as well as specific information about various models, it helped a youngster understand the way they were designed and built.
Similarly, to learn about vintage bicycles, we ask questions of our elders in the hobby. The key point here is that the elders who were around while our favourite vintage machines were still on the road are no longer with us, the last of them having passed on in the past thirty years or so. Now we must depend on those who gleaned that first-hand knowledge from them; these chaps were the ‘youngsters’ then, but now they’re getting older themselves, most in their seventies and eighties. They don’t usually use computers, so much of their knowledge is stored in their heads. By the time we learn from them, it’s second-generation information. My contemporaries and I are in a younger age group – forties to sixties – and we’re busy learning and recording what we can before it’s lost forever. We study 100-year-old magazines to see when certain new innovations were first reviewed (it helps us date bicycles with similar features), read correspondence of the time to try to understand contemporary views and opinions, research old catalogues, meet fellow enthusiasts, help each other with restorations, ride our old bikes as much as possible, and work with our elders to pick up tips and wisdom.

TO FIND OUT HOW OLD YOUR BIKE IS – JOIN THE VETERAN CYCLE CLUB!
Although we are in the so-called ‘Information Age’ and the internet provides a surplus of it – some of it accurate, much of it misleading – there is nowhere near enough information on vintage bicycles. This surprises many people. Sometimes, folks with no experience of the vintage hobby who may have recently unearthed an old bicycle contact me and demand that I immediately tell them what it is, how old it is and what it’s worth. I try to explain as politely as possible that such a service does not exist, and they are often abusive as a result. Usually they want me to identify it so they can sell it on ebay. Luckily, I remembered an old Sufi saying, ‘Only explain things to people in a language they understand.’ So now I answer that such a service, which will obviously increase the value of their unidentified machine, will cost them £50 + VAT. It’s still not a service I actually offer – but at least they are less abusive.
The question remains: ‘How old is my bicycle?’ Also, ‘I have a bicycle that looks like one of yours; if I send you pictures please can you identify it for me?’
The answer is simple. The Veteran Cycle Club (V-CC) has a system of ‘marque enthusiasts’ – volunteers who compile what information they can about particular manufacturers. By joining the V-CC you can access whatever information is available. If that doesn’t help, if it is interesting enough, you might be able to send pictures of it to the the V-CC magazine, or take it to vintage shows and ask exhibitors, or keep an eye on ebay to see if something similar ever comes up. Identifying an unknown bicycle is hard work. You may be lucky, but more than likely it will remain a mystery.
As I have stated before, the V-CC archives and Ray Miller’s Encyclopaedia are invaluable resources: these ongoing projects are becoming the world’s primary source of information on vintage bicycles. The V-CC’s system of marque specialists is unrivalled throughout the world. I recommend every vintage bicycle enthusiast to join the V-CC to access these (and many other) excellent facilities.
FRAME NUMBER DATING
Bicycles that can be dated with 100% accuracy are the exception. Marque enthusiasts use records of shop ledgers that recorded dates sold and frame numbers, and then calculate the ages of other bicycles by comparing them with known frame numbers. Sometimes the date sold does not reflect when a bicycle was actually manufactured (for example, Dursley Pedersens were very expensive, badly marketed and often took a long time to sell). Only certain manufacturers’ frame number sequencing is known. Many did not use chronoligical sequences.
Many manufacturers used ‘bought-in’ bikes at different times, ie made by a different company. This happened in particular in the 1890s when frame styles changed every few years. Frames made by top companies with the old designs were sold off through the trade, so smaller companies then sold bicycles using the old frames with different parts years after!
The records of the majority of the smaller companies no longer exist: you’d be surprised how fast the entire history of a company disappears once the factory closes. There were also a lot of ‘dodgy practices’ within the bicycle trade, with companies regularly liquidating and starting up again and spurious production claims often made for advertising purposes and to inflate a company’s worth. Few published their true production figures. It’s a nightmare trying to make sense of it a hundred years later.
A catalogue description is a good guide, though we rarely have a manufacturer’s catalogue for every year, so may not know for how many years a model was current. Also, though we now consider a catalogue description to be an accurate guide to a bicycle’s specification, despite the catalogue options listed a customer could choose any option whatsoever, even components sold by a competing company.
It’s possible to date Sturmey-Archer hubs, so if the rear hub is original to the bike that often helps.
Bear in mind that owners often updated their bicycles over the years; though we might like our bike to match its catalogue description, updated parts are also a valid part of its history and provenance.
Details of the following manufacturers have been published, so I hope this page can provide an easy reference point. I’ll add to it as I find more.

Founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington. Company has distinction of being oldest firearms manufacturing firm in United States. Since 1856, it has been known by four different names: between 1856 and 1888, E. Remington & Sons; 1888-1910, Remington Arms Company; 1910-1925, Remington Arms U.M.C. Company (Union Metallic Cartridge Company); and 1925 to present, Remington Arms.
1978-New series of serial numbers started on 1-3-78 for 760's starting at B 7,400,000. New serial number range for 742's starting at B 6,000,000 1981-Model 760 ADL and BDL designations replaced with 7600 with straight comb stock and impressed checkering. Bolts were changed from 14 small locking lugs to 4 larger locking lugs.
A serial number is printed on the receiver of each Remington rifle or shotgun, provided it's a newer model. Serial numbers were not a requirement until 1968, so older firearms may not have serial numbers. You can still use the two-letter code on the barrel of the rifle or shotgun to look up the firearm's age. Remington serial #ed all their rifles, I have a M24 Gallery Gun that was built in the early '20s, and it's a got a serial #. The Model 12's # is probably on the tang or under the front of the receiver, like my M24. Dad's old Stevens 86D, which I have now, isn't numbered anywhere except for some patent numbers which don't illuminate when it was.

As a company, Nintendo has a not-so-subtle desire to focus on arts and crafts. There's the Labo, which is based entirely around that, but even video games can be that way. It began when Mario was turned into paper, and since then, we've seen Kirby as yarn and Yoshi as wool. The darling dinosaur is taking another spin in the land of creation with Yoshi's Crafted World, this time based around the idea of a childlike arts-and-craft diorama world.
The idea behind Yoshi's Crafted World is that there are magic gems that get scattered across the world due to the antics of Baby Bowser and his magician Kamek. The Yoshis of the island must set out to recover the magic gems before Bowser and Kamek unleash dastardly deeds. Like most Nintendo games, it's light on the plot and heavy on the charm. You'll meet a wacky cast of craftwork characters who add a delightful sense of charm to what is otherwise a straightforward platformer.
Yoshi's Crafted World plays like any Yoshi game since Yoshi's Island. Everyone's favorite disposable dinosaur has all of his classic abilities, so he can hop, flutter-jump, eat enemies to create eggs, and toss eggs at enemies. If you've ever played a game where Yoshi is the protagonist, you know exactly how to pick up and play Yoshi's Crafted World. The gameplay is polished and accessible for all ages, and this is one of the better variations on the Yoshi's Island gameplay style. I wouldn't say it's as good as the SNES classic, but it's a strong contender for second place.
A major aspect of Yoshi's Crafted World is that while it is primarily a 2D platformer, it isn't only 2D. Yoshi can attack enemies in the background and foreground, and he can even find paths that let him travel there. You need to use these abilities to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. Yoshi may need to hit an object in the background to force a bridge to close, ferret out hidden pieces to fix a bridge, or throw magnets on soda cans to create platforms. Regardless of what you need, it's all very accessible and easy to figure out.
Each stage tends to have its own distinctive gameplay mechanic. You might sneak around like a ninja, pilot a giant Yoshi robot, or push around minecarts. The game moves along at an excellent pace. You don't stay in any stage for too long. If anything, I wished I could see certain mechanics fleshed out more. On the flip side, it keeps the game feeling fresh. At no point did I get tired of a specific stage or idea, and the overall pacing of new mechanics is top-notch.
Your overall goal in Yoshi's Crafted World is to collect flowers. You do this by completing objectives throughout the stages. Each stage has a bevy of flowers hidden within that you have to discover either by finding hidden passages, completing timed challenges, or winning minigames. You also can obtain flowers by finishing a stage without taking damage or by collecting coins. Each stage has a certain number of flowers, but you can usually get two or three for just finishing the level.
This is genuinely the most enjoyable part of the game, and it'll make or break it for people. The game is based around exploration, solving puzzles, and some light twitch action. Don't expect it to be as punishing as a Mario title, though. While the game has a good difficulty curve, you'll seldom encounter a roadblock. You need a certain number of flowers to progress in the game, but as long as you're making a token attempt to collect them, you'll almost always have enough to progress without grinding. It's a good balance of progression and advancement.
The other big thing to do in Yoshi's Crafted World is to collect costumes. The costumes are adorable craftwork that let Yoshi dress up as a cat, milk carton, steamboat, trashcan — basically anything you can imagine. They give Yoshi some extra defense, so it's easier to collect on the 'don't take damage' challenges. Honestly, the real reason they appear is to be painfully adorable. I've always been of the opinion that Yoshi isn't Nintendo's most adorable character, but the costumes are making me reconsider. Seeing Yoshi cheerfully walking along while holding up his fake cow costume or ducking down to look like a Mouser is absurdly adorable.
Yoshi's Crafted World's only big flaw is that it's rather safe. It has a little more bite than Kirby's Epic Yarn, but it's still a very easy title, even on the tougher settings. Platforming is so simple that you can effectively float across stages by timing Yoshi's flutter-jump correctly, and the challenge mostly comes from collecting the various items within the stage. Friends season 8 720p. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it can make some parts of the game, especially the early levels, feel kind of bland. The fact that the adorable costumes make the game easier is also a bit disappointing.
The other way Yoshi's Crafted World feels overly safe is that it feels like another Yoshi game. Kirby's Epic Yarn tied the yarn mechanic to the gameplay, but there's not a lot in Yoshi that feels like it plays off of the craft mechanic, except for the general aesthetic. The core mechanics are based in Yoshi's traditional skills, and I rarely felt like anything needed to be in a craft-focused title. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it means that the crafting aspect is almost entirely visual.

Fortunately, that aesthetic is delightful.Yoshi's Crafted World is a wonderful-looking game from start to finish. The entire world looks like it was made with hand-crafted material, and the level of detail is fantastic. From the fluffy characters to the adorable costumes and the occasional moment when the game 'turns' the camera and lets you see the other side of the diorama world, it all comes together perfectly. Honestly, the game is worth playing just to see the sheer amount of detail that goes into the world. This works as well, if not better, than Epic Yarn and comes together significantly better than Wooly World. The soundtrack is also top-notch. The only real objection is that Yoshi's noises become annoying after a while.
All in all, Yoshi's Crafted World is a delightful adventure that is held back only by being a bit too predictable. It's a solid platformer for gamers of all ages, and it's easy enough for the youngest players but has enough charm to keep adults playing. It's also easily the best Yoshi game since the SNES original, and while it's difficult to live up to a classic, Crafted World does a good job on its own merits. Even if you're not a fan of Nintendo's multicolored dino-horse, it's worth giving Crafted World a shot. You might be charmed and surprised.

Folk Alliance Region Midwest’s “FARMette 2017” conference was held June 24, 2017 at The Buffalo Room in Kansas City’s Westport entertainment district. The day-long event culminated in a juried Showcase Performance, featuring seven Midwest musicians.

John Keck (Kansas City, Missouri)
John Keck is a Kansas City songwriter who creates lyrics with the intent of capturing emotion, depicting a moment in time. Much like a photograph define can define the light. With one foot in the south and one in the Midwest, John’s music is a modern blend of traditional American and a willingness to be undefined.
“I write songs for people who love Van Gogh’s paintings. I want to have a conversation about the emotions behind the songs with our eyes. I want to provoke thought and connect with people. I’d like to see if I can get you to dance, laugh and cry a little.” – John L Keck
John is currently rehearsing songs in the studio in preparation to record a new album this year. This will be a follow album to his “Jack Moon Sessions.” He is performing nearly every weekend this summer, somewhere in the Midwest.

Caleb Ryan Martin (Fayetteville, Arkansas)
Caleb Ryan Martin has, according to one reviewer, “a lonesome voice and rhythm that can at times invoke a lonesome ramblin’ man sound, a voice that will haunt you with some type of mysterious mountain holler sound, like a banshee singing in the nether woods.”
Caleb Ryan Martin hails from the hills of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Looking like a man from leaner and meaner times, Caleb has traveled and played music all across the Midwest and Gulf Coast region, singing with expressive vocals, playing guitar, and picking the banjo providing people with melodic medicine. Caleb currently averages between 150 – 200 shows a year.

Bill Scorzari (Huntington, New York)

Jeff Krause (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
Rooted in the tradition of classic Americana and folk storytelling with a tip of the hat to blues and southern soul, Jeff Krause pairs lyric-forward songs with a guitar style that moves from acoustic coffee house strums to dusty bar blues.
Jeff Krause got his start in the Midwest as a lead guitar player in the vast and ever growing songwriting culture of the Twin Cities. He says “I’m constantly inspired by the seemingly endless talent harbored in Minneapolis and working to create something worthy of that influence.” Jeff Krause writes original songs that are all too relatable about the lost and found of love with a common thread of the persevering spirit born from the highs and lows of life.
